We’ve collaborated with long-time Impact Investing Institute supporter City of London Corporation on a body of work exploring the significant financial, social and economic value that impact investing contributes in the UK and globally, and how to expand the opportunities for policymakers and investors alike.

Aligning impact investors and government priorities

Delivering government missions using impact-led venture capital and private equity highlights how impact-led investment can play a crucial role in achieving UK government priorities including:

  • kickstarting economic growth;
  • building a National Health Service fit for the future;
  • safer streets;
  • breaking down barriers to opportunity;
  • making Britain a clean energy superpower.

The paper outlines how investors interested in impact are an untapped source of capital that is already aligned to such policy objectives, and therefore ideally placed to help achieve these missions.

Focused on practical action, it showcases more than 25 case studies of how to embed social impact decision-making and makes 10 recommendations for policymakers and market participants including on capacity building and increasing deal flow.

The findings were developed through an Impact Investing Institute led event series that saw around 100 key players from nearly 60 organisations explore the opportunities for impact-focused private equity and venture capital on topics including driving inclusive growth across the UK, preventative health and accelerating the just transition.

How the UK is leading the way

Delivering government missions builds on The UK – a centre of excellence in impact investing, which identifies the UK as occupying a coveted position to lead and grow impact investing, and points towards the trends and opportunities for future progress.

The report demonstrates the UK’s leading status across five criteria – clear mission, knowledge and expertise, scale, leading talent and capacity building – and outlines how the UK can pave the way for further growth of the impact investing market globally, by:

  • championing innovation in financing social and environmental goals;
  • meeting the demand for impact and purpose driven jobs;
  • leading the conversation on best practice.

Delivering investment opportunities that support people and planet

We’re grateful for the City of London Corporation’s ongoing support, and for their work to promote the interests of people and planet across London and the UK. We look forward to continuing to tackle some of the most challenging issues affecting the UK together, and to deliver opportunities for the impact investing market.
