Putting people and planet at the heart of investment decisions

In 2024, the Impact Investing Institute launched an ambitious initiative to transform how the $98 trillion global investment market approaches impact investing.

Changing the investment narrative

Working in partnership with Ipsos and supported by the Sorenson Impact Foundation and Friends Provident Foundation, this work aims to:

  1. understand and overcome the barriers preventing mainstream investors from incorporating sustainability and impact considerations into their investment decisions;
  1. understand how investors see their role in economic systems and their potential to create systemic change.

Building on these insights, we are developing models for change and practical tools needed to champion impact investing with investors who are not yet convinced. We are also exploring new narratives about investment’s role in the economy more broadly and develop and test those with key audiences.

The challenge and opportunity

Despite growing recognition of climate change and social inequality as urgent challenges, many capital market actors have yet to fully integrate sustainability and impact considerations into their investment processes. However, significant momentum exists for change:

  • 80% of consumers want their investments to deliver positive impact alongside financial returns
  • Sustainable investments currently represent 36% of global professionally managed assets ($35.3 trillion)
  • The global impact investing market has reached $1.6 trillion
  • Increasing regulatory and policy support for sustainable investment approaches

Project objective

  1. Equip impact and sustainability advocates with effective tools and strategies to engage sceptics and work with them to understand their role in economic systems and their potential to create change
  1. Strategically communicate refined messages across the investment community to drive widespread adoption of impactful investment practices
  1. Transform perceptions around sustainability and impact investing practices

Advisory Group

We have brought together an independent Advisory Group of senior investment, legal and communications professionals who are providing strategic and practical guidance on the work and contribute to its wider evolution.
